Recently on an invitation from the delegate of the Belgian Episcopal Commission “Pro Migrantibus” from the parishes of Eastern Catholic Churches in Belgium priest Oleh Zymak, CSSR, Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainians of France, Benelux, and Switzerland of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Reverend Bishop Mikhail (Hrynchyshyn) visited Brussels and Antwerp. The program of visit of the bishop, in particular, included a meeting with the Bishop of Brussels Monsignor Joseph D’Kezel. At the reception an exchange of opinions took place about a series of questions of the general interest, remarks were shared about the progress in the development of the UGCC parishes of Brussels, and the possibilities for its further development were discussed. At the conclusion of the meeting Bishop Mikhail gifted a Ukrainian icon to his Brussels brother in episcopacy.

KYIV — As part of the Social Days of the UGCC Greek Catholics visited the social projects of other confessions, informed Deacon Ihor Shaban, head of the Commission of UGCC for the assistance of unity between Christians, as was reported by the correspondent SoborNews. For this occasion workers of social structures of the UGCC from Ivano-Frankivs’k, Lviv, Ternopil’, Kharkiv, and Donets’k as well as students of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University went to Kyiv. KYIV — Patriarch Filaret, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), gave his response to the conditions set out in the Address to Faithful Children recently published by the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). In his address to the clergy and faithful of the UOC-MP, Patriarch Filaret noted that he views the dialogue between the two churches as the best way to overcome the divide of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. However, according to Patriarch Filaret, the UOC-MP sets known unacceptable conditions for the dialogue, which indicate that church’s inadequate evaluation of the power of the Kyivan Patriarchate and dependence on the Moscow center. Patriarch Filaret also made known to UOC-MP that in view of such a state of affairs, the UOC-KP “reserves the possibility to consider all constructive proposals of the Constantinople Mother-Church, which would lead to the unification of Ukrainian Orthodoxy” and reminded that the Moscow patriarchate “has no monopoly for ‘canonicity.’”

KYIV — The head of the Theological-Canonical Committee of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), Archbishop Yoan (Modzalevskyi) of Uman, commented on the Address of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) to the faithful of November 24, which stressed that unification is only possible within the UOC-MP and that “schismatic groups” should first repent the sin of the schism. The archbishop of the UAOC noted that he is prepared to accept the first condition whereas the second one requires a “compromise solution” to be found. It was at a meeting of Ukrainian Orthodox Church delegates in Kyiv on 17 January, which was officially presented as a forward to the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, that I saw for myself that such things happen. The main event of the forthcoming nation wide council in Moscow is the election of a new patriarch. The council’s agenda should also include the status of the UOC, whose bishops asked for autocephaly in 1991, and many other things. Indeed, Ukrainian delegates had much to talk about.
