Fifth Church Being Built In Ivano-Frankivsk Village 31.08.2001, [14:14] // news //
As reported in the Channel 1+1 website on 30 August 2001, the village of Stari Bohorodchany in western Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region is building an unprecedented fifth church. It now has two Orthodox and two Greek Catholic churches. Though the fifth will belong to the Greek Catholics, the villagers hope it will become a place of common prayer for the two denominations.
Caritas Ukraine Director To Be Canadian Seminary Rector 23.08.2001, [18:10] // UGCC //
Fr. Ken Nowakowski, president of Caritas Ukraine, is returning to his native Canada to assume the post of rector of Holy Spirit Ukrainian Greek Catholic Seminary in Ottawa for the academic year 2001-2. In addition to his work at Caritas, in his ten years in Ukraine he served as the press secretary of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and press officer of the Catholic Churches of Ukraine for the Papal Visit to Ukraine in June of 2001. His Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Husar has appointed Mr. Andrij Waskowycz acting president of Caritas Ukraine as of 1 September 2001. (Fr. Nowakowski is pictured at right.)
Pope Greets Ukrainians On 10th Anniversary of Independence 23.08.2001, [16:13] // news //
In a greeting addressed to the president and people of Ukraine, His Holiness Pope John Paul II writes: “I am happy to be addressing your highly esteemed person, to pass on to you and all your fellow citizens the warmest wishes. Recalling with pleasure my recent visit to your country, I keep in my heart my meetings with the Ukrainian people, when I shared in their past sufferings and at the same time in their hopes for the future.”
Roman Catholic Ordinations in Kamianets-Podilskyi 23.08.2001, [14:02] // RCC //
On 19 August 2001 ordinations were held in the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kamianets-Podilskyi for the second time this year. Jan Olszanski, bishop ordinary of the diocese, ordained Stanislaw Winiarski to the priesthood and Wasyl Kosik to the diaconate. Both are from the parish in Slavuta. Leon Dubrawski, local auxiliary bishop, was also present, as were a number of priests from the Kamianets-Podilskyi and Lutsk dioceses, seminarians and faithful from the Slavuta parish and the cathedral.
World Orthodox Won’t Celebrate Anniversary of Monastery in Kyiv 22.08.2001, [18:45] // UOC-MP //
Because of a breach of protocol, the leaders of Orthodox Churches throughout the world have refused to attend the 950th anniversary of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves to be held on 27 and 28 August 2001. As reported on 21 August 2001, the metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) claims that the format of the invitations which the Ukrainian government sent to these foreign religious leaders was disrespectful to the canonical UOC-MP and this led to their refusal. Kharkiv Greek Catholics Form Committee To Defend Rights 22.08.2001, [18:10] // UGCC //
The Greek Catholic community in Kharkiv , one of the biggest cities of eastern Ukraine, has unsuccessfully requested land to build a church there since 1997. The request has received differing responses from various religious, government and civil organizations. The leader of Kharkiv’s Greek Catholics announced on 15 August 2001 that they have formed a committee to defend their right to have a place of worship.
Return of Religious Buildings to Karaites Expected 20.08.2001, [15:50] // Karaite //
(Anna Vasilieva, Keston News Service, 17/08/2001) After the events of 25 July at the Uspensky monastery in Bakhchiserai (see KNS 13 August 2001), the Crimean authorities have decided to return kenassahs – Karaite religious buildings – to the Karaites, who have for a long time been trying to reclaim them. The responsible official told Keston that the resolution to this effect is only in draft form, and declined to give any details, but confirmed that the buildings of two kenassahs in the Bakhchiserai historical reservation would be returned to the 'Karaite Spiritual Administration'.
Relic of Saint Andrew The Apostle To Travel To Kyiv 16.08.2001, [21:36] // news //
On 25 August 2001 the head of Saint Andrew the First-Called Apostle will be flown from a monastery on Mount Athos, Greece, to Kyiv. Archbishop Christodoulos, leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, will accompany the relic. (The reliquary of St. Andrew's head is shown at right.)
UOC-MP Won’t Participate in Inter-Religious Celebration 16.08.2001, [21:33] // UOC-MP //
Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), will not take part in a joint prayer service to be conducted by Ukraine’s main religious leaders on Ukrainian Independence Day (24 August 2001). He announced, “on this solemn day the episcopate, clergy and faithful of the UOC-MP will pray for Ukraine in their own churches. Orthodox canons forbid common prayer with representatives of other religious groups.” (Metropolitan Volodymyr is pictured at right.)
Conflict over the fate of the Madrassah (Crimea) 14.08.2001, [21:46] // Muslims //
(Anna Vassiliyeva, Keston News Service, 13 August 2001)On 25 July a demonstration organised by the Crimean Tartar's representative body, the Mejlis, took place in Bakhchisarai, although on 24 July its demands had been met and the Crimean government had cancelled a "secret" decision regarding buildings claimed simultaneously by the Zyndzhyrly madrassah and a neighbouring monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). The demonstration began peacefully but ended in a clash between demonstrators and OMON riot police near the Monastery of the Assumption. Keston News Service has learned that an official commission has been formed to settle controversial issues, but the Muslim community believes that the new Crimean government will not help resolve the issue.
