A sensational discovery was presented on 25 December 2001 at Lviv’s Museum of Ethnography and Art: the miter of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) from 1900 to 1944.

On December 25, 2001 President Leonid Kuchma sent greetings to those Ukrainians who celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar.

Bethlehem’s fire of peace comes to Ukraine

For three consecutive years the light of peace has been brought to Ukraine from Bethlehem, the place of Jesus Christ’s birth. This year it came to Lviv (western Ukraine) on 23 December 2001. Ukrainian members of ”Plast“ (Ukrainian scouts) and “Hurtsers” (Polish scouts) brought the light from Bethlehem to the Catholic and Orthodox churches of the city.

An all-Ukrainian academic conference, “Religion and Church in the Podillia Area: History and The Present,” was held on December 15, 2001 at the Institute of Regional Administration and Law in the central Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi. Participants at the conference discussed the religious situation and relations among denominations in the region. The government finds “the modern religious situation… stable” but a publication linked to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) claims that “the conference maintained an abusive attitude toward [the UOC -MP].”

Autocephalous Orthodox Claim Abuse in Census

Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of Kharkiv and Poltava (Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church [UAOC]) sent a letter to the head of Ukraine’s Parliament expressing his concern over falsifications in the recent state-conducted census. The Ukrainian-language original of the text appeared in RISU’s Ukrainian version on 15 December 2001. The text in its entirety follows.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) has accused state officials of a discriminative attitude towards it. The press office of the UOC-KP released a statement on 23 November 2001 about “the activity of anti-Ukrainian forces which are trying to prevent the development of the Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”

During a meeting on 6 December 2001, Petro Symonenko, head of the Communist Party of Ukraine (pictured at right), and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexis II discussed a wide spectrum of questions. Church-state relations, church divisions in Ukraine, the spiritual and moral state of society, and different aspects of the ecclesiastical and political situation in Ukraine were on the agenda.

First Anniversary of Methodist Church in Odessa

The United Methodist Church celebrated its first anniversary in southwestern Ukraine’s Odessa, a Black Sea port. The community prayerfully marked the event and local figures commented on Methodist activities over the past year. Radio Svoboda reported on the event on 3 December 2001.
