In a brief interview, His Eminence Walter Cardinal Kasper, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, spoke of the general significance of the Papal Visit to Ukraine and its ecumenical significance. The interview was given during a reception at the Lviv Theological Academy held in honor of the first evening of Pope John Paul II’s Pastoral Visit to Lviv on 25 June 2001.

Constantinople Works to Unite UOC-KP and UAOC

On 20 June a meeting was held in Ternopil between Ukrainian Orthodox leaders Filaret Denisenko and Mefody Kudriakov. The meeting was the result of agreements that were reached on 13 June in the Phanar [Constantinople], whose goal is the establishment of a united church organization of those structures which, according to their plans, will be recognized by Constantinople as the united Orthodox Church.

Kyiv, Ukraine, JUNE 25, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Memorials to the victims of Communism and Nazism were two of the most overwhelming moments of John Paul II's 60-hour visit to the Ukrainian capital, which ended today.On Sunday afternoon, the Pontiff visited the common graves of some 200,000 Ukrainians, who died in Kyiv prisons during the Soviet domination. Today, Monday, the Holy Father paid tribute to Ukrainian Jews killed in a 1941 massacre by the Nazis.

On June 25, 2001 in Lviv’s historic Armenian Cathedral, His Holiness Pope John Paul II was given a ceremonial shepherd’s staff by the city’s Armenian community. The meeting and brief prayer service were held just hours after the Pope’s arrival in Lviv.

Two days prior to John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine (June 23 to June 27, 2001) he expressed his wish to visit the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv. This has caused some anxiety because of the Cathedral’s obvious need for restoration. Nevertheless, the Armenian community and the city administration are working together to improve the Cathedral’s condition so that it will be ready to host the successor of St. Peter.

The week of June 10 thirteen leaders from all the major religions in northwestern Ukraine's Volyn region signed a letter addressed to their faithful, calling for mutual understanding, tolerance, and brotherhood in the name of the flourishing of the Ukrainian nation. Fr. Roman Behei, archpriest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Volyn and Rivne and one of the co-signers of the document, reports that he can readily "sit down and talk" with his Orthodox brothers if problems arise.

"The Holy Father gave Kiev's Municipal Pediatric Hospital No.2 the equipment for a children's operating room and a resuscitator for new-borns."
