Kharkiv’s Greek Catholics Can Build Church

The city and regional administrations of Kharkiv have decided to give the local Greek Catholic community a plot of land on which they can build a church. After years of requesting permission, on 16 November 2001 Fr. Mykola Semenovych, the priest of the parish, received a letter from the regional authorities ordering the local government to give the Greek Catholics a long-disputed lot.

Berlin Conference: National and Religious Identity in Ukraine

An international conference was held in Berlin, Germany from 23 to 25 November 2001 on the theme: “National and Religious Identity in Eastern Europe, The Ukrainian Example.”

Icon of Virgin Mary Crowned in Zhovkva

Stanislaw Padajewski, auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Lviv, crowned a copy of the icon of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary on 17 November 2001 in western Ukrainian Zhovkva (Lviv region). The crown had been blessed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on 26 June of this year during the Papal Mass in Lviv.

Crimean Muslim Mufti Calls For Peace In Afghanistan

Adzhe Nurali Ablaiev, Muslim mufti of Crimea (southern Ukraine), said that the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan should be the beginning of the peace process in Afghanistan. Ramadan, the commemoration of Muhammad's reception of divine revelation, this year will be observed from November 17 to December 16. The mufti spoke to Radio Svoboda on 19 November 2001.

Autocephalous Orthodox Respond to KP

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) commented on a recent press conference held by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP). The authors of the UAOC’s statement, released the week of 12 November 2001, were glad that the UOC-KP now agrees with them that secular forces “should not interfere” in the process of creating “a single national Ukrainian Orthodox Church.” But they were disturbed that the UOC-KP refused to continue dialogue with the UAOC that began last year. Ukrainian Government Refutes KP Orthodox Claims of Opposition

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine responded to recent claims of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) that the government is working against autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In a press release dated 9 November 2001, Volodymyr Seminozhenko, vice premiere of Ukraine, said that “the government engages in dialogue with all branches of Orthodoxy” and refuted the UOC-KP’s claims. Catholic Leaders Honor Ukrainian Officials

Greek and Roman Catholic religious leaders in Ukraine honored numerous officials who helped make Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine this summer a success. Dozens of officials were awarded at the ceremony held in St. Basil’s Church (UGCC) in Kyiv on 8 November 2001.

KP Orthodox Claim Ukrainian Government Against Autocephaly

Representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) claim that the Ukrainian government is working against gaining an autocephalous status for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Filaret, head of the UOC-KP, and Pavlo Movchan, national deputy in Ukraine’s Parliament and head of the civic organization “One National Church for Ukraine,” participated in a press conference held in Kyiv on 6 November 2001 that addressed the issue.

Evangelical Baptist ministers in Transcarpathia conducted evangelization services, including presentation of the film Jesus, attended by over 3000 people, 400 of which prayed the prayer of repentance. The Church’s information agency reported on 5 November 2001 that the services, held in cooperation with the “Ukraine for Christ” mission, were held over a two week period and conducted by communities in far southwestern Ukraine’s Uzhhorod and Perchynskyi districts. Greek Catholic Synod in Truskavets

The bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) held a synod on the premises of the administrative center of the UGCC’s Sambir-Drohobych eparchy (Truskavets, western Ukraine) from 30 to 31 October 2001. New canon law statutes, charitable activities, the Church’s information office, financial activities and outreach ministries were discussed.
