Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 28 September 2001 presented two new publications dedicated to His Holiness John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine this past June. Anatolii Zlenko, head of the ministry, called the appearance of the books “an event in the cultural and spiritual life of Ukraine.”

His Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, blessed a unique ecumenical center for youth in Lviv on 21 September 2001. Established by the Salesian Order, the Don Bosco Center, named after a popular Italian saint, will offer classes in vocational skills.
Crimean Demonstration Against “Islamic Extremism” 28.09.2001, [16:36] // Muslims //
Hundreds demonstrated in Symferopol on 19 September 2001, urging political leaders and other citizens to defend the Christians of Crimea from the threat of worldwide and local Islamic extremism. The demonstration occurred against the backdrop of the recent terrorism in the United States of America and the Parliament of Crimea’s decision to give a Muslim community land near Symferopol on which to build a new mosque.

As its press service reports, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) has expressed its condolences to the people of America in various ways. On 12 and 19 September 2001 memorial services were held in Kyiv for the deceased victims of terrorism. The head of the UOC-KP, Patriarch Filaret, gave an interview to the Ukrainian media regarding the situation. And the patriarch also sent a letter of condolence to the American Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlos Pascual.

Pope John Paul II sent a telegram addressed to Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on 22 September 2001. The telegram was sent from onboard the Pope’s plane, which was flying to Kazakhstan.

Ukrainian Communists Ask Believers’ Forgiveness For Soviet Persecution 20.09.2001, [16:37] // UOC-MP //
The Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) has for the first time officially asked forgiveness for the sufferings of religious believers during the Soviet regime. The CPU’s press service released a statement on 18 September 2001 which deals with various religious themes and has been positively received by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The text is in response to a recent letter of Ukraine’s Yabluko [“Apple”] Party which condemns the Communist Party’s participation in the persecution of religious believers during Soviet times.

Bishop Basil Medvit of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) sent a letter in the name of the entire UGCC to the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Carlos Pascual in Kyiv on 13 September 2001. A translation of the text follows.

Representatives of 12 Christian denominations met in Kyiv on 29 August 2001 to compose the statutes for a new civic organization, the Ukrainian Interdenominational Christian Mission “Spiritual and Benevolent Care in Penal Institutions.” There had been a previous arrangement between the state and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) regarding prison ministry, but the ministry has been made interdenominational to expand its scope.
Autocephalous Archbishop Sees “Improvement” In Inter-Orthodox Relations 13.09.2001, [18:19] // UAOC //
“There has been some improvement in the relations between the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church [UAOC], the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate [UOC-KP] and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate [UOC-MP].” Thus spoke Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of Kharkiv and Poltava (UAOC) on 13 September 2001.

Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine (Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate) on 12 September 2001 sent his condolences regarding the terrorist attacks which occurred in New York and Washington on 11 September 2001.
