Greek Catholics Minister To Youth And Port Workers In Kherson

Four youth groups united under the Apostleship of Prayer organization have been formed at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic (UGCC) Monastery of St. Basil the Great in southern Ukrainian Kherson. The monastery houses a catechetical school where monks and volunteers work as instructors. The local church is also beginning a ministry for Kherson’s port workers. This news was reported to RISU on 29 April 2001.

A memorial service was held on 26 April 2002 in Kyiv’s Church of the Entrance of Jesus Into Jerusalem, which was built to commemorate all the heroes who sacrificed their lives to avert the Chernobyl tragedy. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabodan, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), laid a wreath on the memorial to the Chernobyl heroes.

A round-table discussion dedicated to developing mass media coverage of national minorities in Ukraine was held on 24 April 2002 in the “Ukrainian House,” a cultural and educational center in Kyiv. Viktor Bondarenko, head of the State Committee on Religious Matters of Ukraine, delivered a report entitled “The Role of the Mass Media in Covering Religious Life in Ukraine.”

The Karaite community of Crimea called upon the local authorities to protect their ancient cemetery from desecration. The recent discovery of a treasure chest of gold and silver coins by archeologists in the cave town of Chufut-Kale, near the city of Bakhchisarai (Crimea, southern Ukraine) has caused a “pilgrimage” of treasure-seekers to the place. This news was reported by the Crimean radio station “Trans-M-radio” on 24 April 2002.

The Jewish cultural center “Beit Dan,” Hebrew for “House of Dan,” opened on 24 April 2002 in Kharkiv (eastern Ukraine). From 800 to 1500 Jewish people visit the center daily, where they have the opportunity to interact with each other, learn more about their national traditions and pass this knowledge on to youth. In the estimation of foreign guests, “Beit Dan” is one of the best centers in both the CIS and Europe.

The Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) held its regular session at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 23 April 2002. Under the direction of Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabodan, head of the UOC-MP, the synod discussed plans for celebrating the tenth anniversary of the historic Kharkiv Sobor (Assembly), which was significant in the recent history of the UOC-MP. It also noted the tenth anniversary of Metropolitan Volodymyr’s term as leader of the UOC-MP. Among other issues discussed were property issues and the city authorities of Kyiv, and efforts to spread religious and moral education throughout Ukraine.

The Lviv region branch of the Maltese Cross, an international aid organization, continuing its ongoing assistance of children’s institutions, has begun an effort called “Pretty like an Easter egg.” The goal is to encourage interaction between children who live in institutions and participants of organizations involved in charitable activities.

The sections of the Dormition Hermitage of the Holy Hill in the city of Slovianohorsk, Donetsk region(eastern Ukraine), which were ruined during Soviet times are set to be restored. The reconstruction work is the result of a contest held under the direction of the regional office of city construction and architecture looking for the best ideas for development projects in the city. A group of architects was formed to work on new rebuilding plans. The news was announced by the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate on 20 April 2002.

Delegations of the patriarchates of Moscow and Constantinople met in Yalta, Crimea (southern Ukraine) on 19-20 April 2002 as part of a regular series of consultations devoted to the problems of schism in world Orthodoxy, above all in Ukraine. Archbishop Vsevolod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA (UOC USA), a member of the Constantinople delegation, spoke about the issues involved. Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of the Ukrainian Autcephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) also offered his opinions on the situation.

11th Autocephalous Kharkiv-Poltava Sobor Discusses Orthodox Union

The 11th sobor (assembly) of the Kharkiv-Poltava eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) was held on 19 April 2002. Among the topics discussed were plans for implementing the union of the Orthodox churches of Ukraine into a single, national Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
