Problems of Orthodoxy in Ukraine Discussed at International Conference in Yalta

An international scholarly conference on political science entitled “A New Aspect of Russian and Ukrainian Relationships: The Crimean Example” was held in the Livadiyskyi Castle in Yalta (Crimea, southern Ukraine) from 24 to 26 February 2002. Among its organizers were the Moscow City Administration, the Crimean Supreme Council and the Institute of CIS countries. One of the subjects discussed at the conference was the problem of Orthodoxy in Ukraine.

Christian Charity Fund In Ivano-Frankivsk To Deliver Lectures on AIDS

In order to prevent the spread of HIV, a course of lectures on AIDS will be conducted for students of higher educational institutions in the Ivano-Frankivsk region (western Ukraine) from 26 to 28 February 2002. Employees of “Solidarity,” a Christian charity fund, will deliver lectures at the Medical Academy, the National Technical Oil and Gas University and Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian University. The course will be given in the form of a dialogue with the use of visual aids and methodological literature. The Carpathian Information and Advertising Agency posted the news on 22 February 2002.

Wesley College Holds Missionary Conference in Kyiv

“The Gospel for Everyone,” a missionary conference, was held at John Wesley Bible College in Kyiv from 11 to 15 February 2002. The aim of the conference was to acquaint church members and students with activities of certain Christian missions, as well as involve them in missionary service.

Czech Orthodox Archbishop Christopher Visits Transcarpathia

Archbishop Christopher of Prague and the Czech Republic visited Transcarpathia from 13 to 18 February 2002. He arrived at the invitation of Bishop Ahapyt of Mukachevo and Uzhorod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

Conference On Totalitarian Sects Held In Zaporizhzhia

From 12 to 13 February 2002 an international conference “Orthodoxy and The Threat of Totalitarian Sects in Ukraine” took place in Zaporizhzhia (southeastern Ukraine) with the blessing of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). Participants of the conference expressed their concern over uncontrollable activities of sects which they consider "totalitarian." The participants argued that, apart from undermining basic human rights, these sects pose a threat to people’s health, society and the state as a whole.

Judaism School Held in Kharkiv

From 17 to 20 February 2002, the Kharkiv branch of International Solomon University held a “winter school” on Judaism for school children and college students. The syllabus included a number of educational mini-courses, during which instructors of Judaism from CIS countries acquainted the audience with the history, religion and traditions of the Jewish people. Students who completed the courses with honors have the opportunity to enroll at International Solomon University without taking entrance exams.

A religious pilgrimage with the relics and icon of the great healer St. Ahapyt of the Caves began on 15 February 2002. It will be continuing until 11 March 2002 in eastern and southern regions of Ukraine with the blessing of Metropolitan Vodymyr Sabodan, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

Religion and The Press Discussed At German-Ukrainian Workshop

Coverage of religious news by mass media, education of religious journalists and other important issues were discussed during a two-week workshop “Religion and the Press: The Impact of the Press on The Church.” Held in Kyiv at the beginning of February 2002, it was conducted by the Academy of the Ukrainian Press, the Academy of the Bavarian Press (Germany) and other Western institutions. Klara Gudzyk of the newspaper “The Day” wrote a column on the subject, which appeared on 9 February 2002 The text follows.
