Cardinal Husar Discusses Military Chaplaincy With General

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), met with Ukrainian General Vitalii Radzetskyi to talk about providing military chaplains for Ukraine’s armed services. The meeting was held at the cardinal’s residence on 22 January 2002.

Autocephalous Orthodox Church Won’t Interfere in Elections

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) will not interfere in the elections to be held in Ukraine on 31 March 2002. The bishops announced this at a meeting with Mykhailo Vyshyvaniuk, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Administration, on 23 January 2002.

Christian Candidates For Parliament

The Party of the All-Ukrainian Association of Christians (AUAC), meeting in Kyiv on 21 and 22 January 2002, composed its list of candidates for Ukraine’s upcoming parliamentary elections. Among the candidates on the list are Fr. Oleh Sknar,a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate and Volodymyr Franchuk, deputy-head of the All-Ukrainian Alliance of Evangelical Christians. Other Christian-oriented parties are also preparing for the elections, which are to be held on 31 March 2002.

Orthodoxy in Sumy School Curriculum

A meeting organized by the Department of Religious Education and Catechetics of the Sumy eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate unanimously voted to introduce religion into the public school curriculum. Media Internet Group reported on the story on 21 January 2002.

Autocephalous Orthodox Have Own Calendar For Christian Unity Week

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) will be celebrating the week of prayer for Christian unity this year. But, because the standard dates coincide with a major religious feast, the eparchy of Kharkiv and Poltava will delay slightly, observing the week from 21 to 27 January. At a press conference held during the pre-election congress of the Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU), its leader, Oleksandr Moroz, spoke about the SPU’s attitude toward religion in general and the Orthodox Church. “Orthodoxy in Ukraine” reported on the event on 15 January 2002.

2002 Proclaimed Year of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj in Ternopil

As reported by Radio Ternopil on 15 January 2002, Ternopil’s city administration has proclaimed 2002 the year of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. He was head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from 1944 to 1984. This year is the 110th anniversary of his birth.
