Autocephalous Orthodox Archbishop Reflects On Kyivan Orthodox 10th Anniversary

Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of Kharkiv and Poltava of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) released an address on 25 June 2002 commenting on the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP).

Orthodox Trinity Church In Kyiv Marks Fifth Anniversary

Ceremonies dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Church of the Holy Trinity took place in Kyiv on 24 June 2002. Holy Trinity Church is one of the biggest churches built in Kyiv since Ukraine’s independence.

National Deputy Ivan Myhovych of the Communist Party announced on 21 June 2002 that a union of various political factions in support of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church had been started in Ukraine’s Parliament.

Two New Moscow Orthodox Metropolitans Enthroned

Archbishop Irynei of Dnipropetrovsk and Pavlohrad and Archbishop Yoanikii of Luhansk and Starobelsk of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) were enthroned as metropolitans in the Assumption Church of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 19 June 2002.

Cardinal Husar Addresses Cemetery Conflict

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, on 18 June 2002 issued an address concerning the commemoration of military burial places at the Lychakivskyi Cemetery in Lviv. The address was in response to the concern of a group of Lviv intelligentsia about a threatening crack in Ukrainian-Polish relations, caused by a misunderstanding over Polish military burial places at the cemetery. The group sent an open letter to the presidents of Ukraine and Poland in mid-June.

Cross Of Christ Arrives At Kyivan Monastery

A relic brought to Ukraine from the Greek Sahmat Monastery of the Transfiguration and reputed to be a part of the cross of Jesus Christ, arrived at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 18 June 2002. This was the first time over the past 900 years that the relic was taken out of the monastery.

Ophthalmologists Conference Held In Orthodox Monastery

A conference for ophthalmologists of western Ukraine was held from 15 to 16 June 2002 in the Monastery of the Assumption (Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate). The women’s monastery is located in northwestern Ukrainian Volodymyr-Volynskyi district (Volyn region). As there is a high rate of eye disease among children of the region, it is planned that a clinic to safeguard children’s sight will be opened at the monastery, where leading specialists will be invited to work.

Vatican International Secretary To Visit Ukraine

Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, Secretary for Relations with States for the Vatican, will make an official visit to Ukraine from 22 to 28 June 2002. Archbishop Tauran will visit Kyiv and Lviv on the first anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine in 2001.

Two Roman Catholic Bishops Ordained In Lviv

Father Marian Buczek and Father Leon Maly of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) were ordained as auxiliary bishops of the Lviv archeparchy on 20 June 2002 in the Assumption Cathedral in Lviv.


President Greets Orthodox Metropolitan On 10th Anniversary Of Kharkiv Sobor

On 19 June 2002, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma participated in a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Kharkiv Sobor, which elected Metropolitan Volodymyr as head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). Kuchma called the Sobor “a significant milestone in the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church” and awarded Metropolitan Volodymyr the state order of Yaroslav the Wise.
