Church In Honor Of Firefighters To Be Built In Kyiv 28.03.2002, [12:47] // UOC-KP //
Patriarch Filaret of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate consecrated the site for a church in the Obolon district of Kyiv on 22 March 2002. The Church of the Burning Bush is going to be the first church erected in honor of firefighters who have died while doing their duty. Oleksandr Omelchenko, mayor of Kyiv, and the administration of the Kyivan fire prevention office also participated in the ceremony.

The State Committee on Religious Matters, together with the all-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and the Educational Programs Center conducted an international scholarly conference, “Secular and Religious Systems of Education: Common Goals in Ukrainian Society,” on 21-22 March 2002 in Kyiv. The perspective of cooperation between the systems of secular and religious education as well as their possible coexistence were the major topics for discussion at the conference.

A press conference on the appeal of national deputies of Ukraine’s Parliament to the General Prosecutor’s Office concerning the allegedly unlawful registration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) in 1992, was held in UNIAN (a national news agency) on 22 March 2002. The theft of property belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), along with a protest later sent to the General Prosecutor’s Office, were also touched upon at the press conference.

Leonid Kuchma, President of Ukraine, signed a decree “On Urgent Measures for Combating the Negative Consequences of Totalitarian Policies of the Former Soviet Union regarding Religion and Restoration of the Violated Rights of Churches and Religions Organizations.” This news was reported by the Department of Information and Public Relations of the presidential administration on 21 March 2002.

The head of the Lviv regional branch of the Election Committee of Ukraine, Roman Koshovyi, announced that he knows of numerous cases when priests have been doing political campaigning for certain candidates or political parties during religious services. He said this at a press conference held on 19 March 2002 in Lviv.

A constituent conference of the Ukrainian Center of Patristics and Byzantine Studies was held on 14 March 2002 in the building of the patriarchate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in Kyiv. It summarized almost a year of work in establishing the center, which was started at the initiative of the Kyivan eparchial synod on 5 April 2001.

The Governmental Committee on Social, Scientific and Humanitarian Development at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine passed a resolution on 11 March 2002 according to which theology is now included on the list of academic disciplines.
