The Roman Catholic community in central Ukrainian Smila (Cherkasy region) intends to sue the Cherkasy regional administration for “inactivity which is causing the destruction of an architectural monument of national value.” The authorities have refused to return a parish building adjoining the historic Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption, built in 1818. This news was reported by the information agency “Observer” on 29 May 2002.

A press conference dedicated to the upcoming 3rd Session of the Patriarchal Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) was held in the Metropolitan Palace at St. George’s in Lviv on 29 May 2002. The sobor will take place from 30 June to 4 July 2002 in Lviv. With the motto “Jesus Christ – Source of Renewal for the Ukrainian Church,” the sobor will include contemplation and practical initiatives aimed at solving urgent social problems of contemporary Ukrainian society.

The Hare Krishna community in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, together with the Church of Christ and other Pentecostal denominations in eastern Ukraine, filed a lawsuit against “Dialogue,” the All-Ukrainian Center of Religious Security and Assistance to Victims of Destructive Sects, and the TV company “Aleks.” This news was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate on 28 May 2002.

More than 100 academic, artistic, restoration and iconographic institutions representing Ukraine, Russia, Greece and Belarus took part in an exhibition entitled “Orthodox Ukraine,” which opened in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves on 28 May 2002. The exhibition was organized by the monastery and the National Historical and Cultural Preserve of the Caves in Kyiv, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). With the blessing of Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) of the UOC-MP, “Orthodox Ukraine” will run until 2 June 2002.

The Ukrainian Center of Byzantine Studies and Patristics, recently created in Kyiv, held a seminar on 23 May 2002 entitled “The Heritage of the Fathers of the Church as a Factor in Forming the Orthodox Pastor.” This was Ukraine’s first interdenominational patristics seminar.
Autocephalous Orthodox Hold Church Slavonic Service 28.05.2002, [22:14] // UAOC //
Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of Kharkiv and Poltava of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) conducted a service in the Church Slavonic language in St. Dymytrii Chapel in Kyiv on 23 May 2002. This is the first time the classical Slavic language was used in the chapel since it was consecrated in 1998. The liturgy was part of the UAOC’s efforts to revive the use of Church Slavonic.

“The Contemporary Orthodox Icon,” an exhibition of icons representing almost 100 works by painters from 11 cities of Ukraine, opened in eastern Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk. According to the St. Nicholas Society, the charitable organization in Dnipropetrovsk which organized the event, this exhibition testifies to the renewal of the art of icon-painting in Ukraine.
