The press center of the patriarchate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) on 27 November 2002 released a statement concerning the return of Archbishop Moisei of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church-Sobornopravna (UAOC-S), who has been recently appointed metropolitan, to Ukraine. (“Sobornopravna” is a term that means “in accordance with the canonical regulations of Orthodoxy.”)

President Meets With Pope

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma met with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican library on 28 November 2002. According to Olena Hromnytska, the president’s press secretary, during the ten-minute meeting the Pope wished Ukraine success on its way to European integration. Pope John Paul II also noted that he recalls his visit last year to Ukraine, in particular to the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Lviv, with great delight.

New Premier Comments On Possible Changes in Religion Committee

Victor Yanukovych, newly appointed prime minister of Ukraine, said administrative changes in the National Committee on Religious Affairs in Ukraine have not been discussed yet. “So far, this issue has not been considered and consultations on selecting a new head for the National Committee on Religious Affairs have not been conducted,” said Yanukovych. “However, after the appointment of the ministers that will have to work directly with the head of this committee, we will begin consultations on choosing new authorities for the committee. Everything in its time.” This was announced on 28 November 2002.

Seminar On Greek Catholic Church Held In Moscow

A seminar entitled “The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church: Dispelling the Myth” was held in the building of the Moscow society “Memorial” on 25 November 2002. The conference was organized by the Mykola Mitrokhin Institute of Religious Studies in the CIS and Baltic States with the support of the Heinrich Bell Foundation. A number of Greek Catholic theologians and religious studies scholars from Lviv and Kyiv participated in the seminar.

Meeting Of Interchurch Assistance Committee Held In Kyiv
