Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, apostolic nuncio in Ukraine, and UGCC bishops from Ukraine and abroad consecrated the cornerstone of the UGCC patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in Kyiv on 27 October 2002.

An international scholarly conference entitled “University Chaplaincy in the Third Millennium: Eastern Europe” was held at Ivan Franko National University in Lviv from 25 to 27 October 2002. The conference was organized by the Patriarchal Commission on Youth Affairs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Ivan Franko National University, and the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU).

Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), on 24 October 2002 sent a letter to the head of the Ukrainian Parliament, heads of parliamentary groups and all national deputies of Ukraine. In the letter, he asked them to consider the proposal of the UOC-MP and not pass the legislative bill “On the Amendments to the Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations,” submitted by the National Committee on Religious Matters of Ukraine.

Muslim organizations in Ukraine have condemned the terrorist act in Moscow on 23 October 2002, when approximately 700 spectators were taken hostage by a group of gunmen in the building of the theatrical center “In Dubrovka.” In addition, they expressed their extreme concern that among the hostages are also Ukrainian citizens, who have no relation to the war in Chechnya.
