German Lutheran Church Reopens In Odesa

A pastoral center of the German Lutheran Church that was closed down by the totalitarian atheistic regime in 1938 reopened in southern Ukrainian Odesa on 21 September 2002. On the same day, the sculpture of St. Paul, the church building and the organ were also consecrated.

Melkite Patriarch Gregory III Visits Ukraine

Patriarch Gregory III (Laham) of Antioch and all the East, head of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, arrived in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on 23 September 2002. Archbishop Joseph Absi and Archimandrite Eli Haddad will accompany the patriarch during his visit in Ukraine.

Cherkasy Roman Catholics Send Authorities Protest Letter

Fr. Oleksandr Hurskyi, pastor of the Roman Catholic Assumption Church in the central Ukrainian city of Cherkasy, sent a letter of protest to Volodymyr Lukianets, head of the Cherkasy regional administration. This was done in response to a letter which the regional department for nationalities, migration and religion sent to Fr. Hurskyi on 13 September 2002. Fr. Hurskyi has long been asking for the return of church property and criticized the state’s response to these claims. This news was reported by the information agency ForUm on 24 September 2002.

European Commission For Church Reconciliation Visits Lviv

MOSCOW. 23 Sept 2002 (Interfax) - Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow and All Russia intends to visit Ukraine by the end of this year. Alexis made this announcement after meeting with Chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada [parliament] Volodymyr Lytvyn.

Government To Discuss Restitution Of Religious Property

On 25 September 2002, the Ukrainian government will consider a plan of urgent measures for combating the negative consequences of the totalitarian policies of the former Soviet Union regarding religion and the restoration of the violated rights of churches and religious organizations. Kyiv Official Faces Imprisonment For Allowing Construction Near Monastery

Ruslan Kukharenko, head of Kyiv’s Department for the Protection of Historic and Cultural Monuments, who gave permission for the construction of a cafe near the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, is being charged with abuse of power. According to current Ukrainian legislation, he now faces two years of correctional labor or up to five years of imprisonment.
