1 thousand lonely and homeless residents of western Ukrainian Lviv ate a traditional Easter breakfast around a festal table set for them at the Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. George. This occurred on 27 April 2003, Easter day according to the Julian calendar.

The Pentecostal community “Word of Truth” has been picketing the editorial office of the radio-television company “Hok” in Komsomolska, central Ukrainian Poltava region, for 10 days. “Word of Truth” claims that the station broadcast biased reporting about their community and is demanding air time to respond, or threatens to take the company to court. The press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) posted the news on 22 April 2003.

Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and Andrii Pidaiev, Ukraine’s minister of health care, signed an agreement of mutual cooperation on 22 April 2003 in Kyiv. Cooperation will include the organization of medical assistance for invalids, training nurses, charitable activities, and pastoral support for patients at cancer wards.

Orthodox (UOC-MP) Metropolitan Consecrates Insignia Of Chornobyl Union 23.04.2003, [11:12] // UOC-MP //
At the request of the Chornobyl Union of Ukraine (CUU), Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabodan, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, consecrated the official standard of the union in the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. The metropolitan also blessed the CUU order, entitled “The Cross of Chornobyl,” and approved the design of the union’s icon “The Savior of Chornobyl.” This news was reported on 21 April 2003.

President Greets Roman Catholics On Easter 22.04.2003, [09:35] // Church-state relations //
On 21 April 2003, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma sent Easter greetings to Ukraine’s Roman Catholics, who celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus Christ according to the Gregorian calendar the day before. The president wished them spiritual peace, serenity, family calm, happiness and good health. “On this day, every Christian compares his deeds, and whole life, with the Lord’s commandments. Love of neighbor, mercy, patience and forgiveness will always remain the greatest virtues of our society, whose development is inseparable from Christian traditions and morals,” said President Kuchma.

Orthodox Deputies Association Formed In Parliament 22.04.2003, [09:34] // Church-state relations //
An association of Orthodox deputies, which unites 157 national deputies of Ukraine, was recently established in the country’s parliament. Henadii Vasyliev, assistant to the head of the Ukrainian Parliament, made this announcement during the last parliamentary session in April. This news was reported on 20 April 2003.
