The various branches of the Orthodox churches in Ukraine must unite despite objections from the Moscow Patriarchate, Patriarch Filaret, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), has said. Discussions on unification between his church and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) are ongoing and there are no major problems there, Filaret said. The Communist Party of Ukraine has released a statement accusing the Pylyp Orlyk Institute of Democracy (POID) and the US-Ukraine Foundation of ignoring a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued on 19 November 2002 and discrediting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). According to the statement, the foundation and institute had been warned in advance of eviction from the building of the Monastery of the Holy Presentation of the Lord (UOC-MP) by 23 February 2003. Petro Symonenko, head of the Communist Party of Ukraine, recently sent a letter to Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, asking to transfer the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).
