30 May 2003 (RISU.org.ua) – Lviv. Taras Chornovil, national deputy of Ukraine of Viktor Yushchenko’s “Our Ukraine” faction, has asked Myron Yankiv, head of the regional state administration in western Ukrainian Lviv, to look into the situation with the icon collection at the National Museum in Lviv that were transferred from the city’s Armenian Cathedral. “Invaluable masterpieces are currently preserved in horrible conditions,” said Chornovil.

Kyiv 29 May 2003 Serhii Krolevets, director general of the national reserve of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, commented on the current situation with the reserve’s museum building, seized by a group of monks and faithful on 19 April 2003. He said that bringing the local Orthodox (UOC-MP) community to court would only be the last resort in solving the conflict. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine recently submitted another legislative bill “On the Amendments to the Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” to the Ukrainian Parliament. This happened after churches and religious organization expressed their reservations concerning the bill, which was worked out by the National Committee on Religious Matters. This news was reported by Oleksandr Zaiets, director of the Institute of Religious Freedom, on 27 May 2003.

The 1st All-Ukrainian Congress for Missionaries, held under the slogan “We Will Be Saved Through Love and Unity,” started work with the blessing of Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabodan, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on 27 May 2003. Approximately 140 delegates from 31 UOC-MP eparchies of Ukraine and also guests from Russia and Belarus are participating in the congress, which is organized the by the Synodal Department for Religious Education, Evangelization and Missionary Work of the UOC-MP.

A conference entitled “The Formation of Responsibility for Creatures and Balanced Development” was held in Wroclaw, Poland, from 15 to 18 May 2003. It was organized by the Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CEEC) and gathered 60 delegates from 22 countries of the world, including Greek and Roman Catholics from Ukraine. The conference was part of a series of CEEC meetings on ecology that have already been conducted for five years.
