European standards and requirements. It is planned that the bill will be considered in the Ukrainian Parliament on 30 September 2003.

Ochakiv – Ukrainian archeologists have recently found the remains of an ancient Greek temple of Aphrodite on the island of Berezan, situated in the Black Sea near Ochakiv, southern Ukrainian Mykolaiv region. Archeologists believe this might be one of the oldest monuments of ancient architecture in the Northern Black Sea area, dating back to the 7th century BC. This news was reported on 24 September 2003.

Kharkiv -- Fourteen monks of the Monastery of the Protection of the Mother of God of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv have left the monastery after an alleged conflict with the eparchy’s authorities. Fr. Tarasii Voitenko, secretary of the Kharkiv eparchy of the UOC-MP, has refuted rumors that the monks were forced out of the monastery. This news was reported on 24 September 2003.

The Ukrainian delegation was not invited to participate in a congress of traditional and national religions of the world that was held in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, on 23 September 2003. According to Liudmyla Fylypovych, professor of philosophy at the department of religious studies of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Ukraine, the organizers stated that “Ukraine is represented by Patriarch Alexis II of Moscow, who is the legitimate head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”
