Four Religious Hierarchs Make Popularity Rating

Patriarch Filaret, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and Yaakov Dov Bleich, chief rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine, made the journal Korrespondent’s TOP-100 popularity rating of the most influential people in Ukraine. The hierarchs occupied the 11th, 14th, 17th and 39th places respectively. The rating was released on 21 April 2004. According to observers, the rating of religious hierarchs this year is lower compared with 2003, since religious issues have become less important than political ones.

During Easter week, over 3000 faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic churches came to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC-USA) Metropolia Center for the Annual Remembrance Pilgrimage at St. Andrew Memorial Church and Cemetery in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, USA. The news was released on 19 April 2004 by the UOC-USA office of public relations.

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), conducted a pastoral visit to southern Ukraine’s Odesa region from 23 to 27 April 2004. He visited communities of local faithful and met with representatives of the state and other religious groups.

Simferopol, Crimea -- The Armenian community of southern Ukrainian Crimea on 24 and 25 April 2004 commemorated the victims of the genocide of the Ottoman Empire against Armenians in 1915, which, according to varying estimates, took 1.5 million lives.

Parliament Registers Bill to Exempt Religious Organizations from Charity Tax

Kyiv -- On 22 April 2004, the Ukrainian Parliament registered a legislative bill, worked out by national deputies Stretovych and Turchynov, on amendments to Article 5 of the Law of Ukraine “On Value-Added Tax,” which regulates charity assistance for religious organizations.

Kyiv -- On 26 April 2004, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, Volodymyr Lytvyn, chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, and Viktor Yanukovych, prime minister of Ukraine, together with Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), commemorated the victims of the tragic explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. Metropolitan Volodymyr served a memorial service in Kyiv’s Church of the Entrance of Jesus Into Jerusalem, which was built in memory of all the heroes who sacrificed their lives to avert the Chernobyl tragedy. After that, they laid a wreath on the memorial to the Chernobyl heroes. On that day, memorial services for the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy, their families and all who suffered were also held in churches throughout Ukraine.

Kyiv -- On 17 April 2004, the Kharkiv and Poltava eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), headed by Archbishop Ihor (Isichenko), issued a decree on the establishment of the Kyiv and Tavria deaneries of the Kharkiv and Poltava eparchy, covering the territories of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, the Kyiv, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions, and Crimea.

Kyiv -- A scholarly and practical conference entitled “Spiritual Grounds for the Development of Humanity in the Epoch of Globalization and the Ukrainian Prospects,” held in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on 23 April 2004, gathered representatives of various Ukrainian Christian churches and the chief rabbi of Ukraine. The representatives discussed current problems of the spiritual, moral and cultural development of humanity and Ukrainian society in the context of current global processes.
