Zarvanytsia, Ternopil region -- During a pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia in western Ukrainian Ternopil region from 26 to 27 June 2004, the Greek Catholic youth sent an open letter to Pope John Paul II, expressing their concern over the recognition of the patriarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC).

Kharkiv-- A group of faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), headed by Fr. Volodymyr Sydorenko, protested the construction of a Roman Catholic monastery on Klochkovska Street in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv, claiming that an Orthodox church was supposed to be built there. Simferopol, Crimea -- On 23 June 2004, 22 citizens of southern Ukrainian Crimea received the "Righteous of the Nations" award from the Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine, Naomi Ben-Ami, and the Ukrainian Jewish community in recognition of their contribution to the rescuing of Jews during World War II. Another five citizens of Crimea received the “Righteous of Ukraine” award.

Kyiv -- A conference of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, has gathered Orthodox MPs, political and religious leaders from 24 countries of the world as well as representatives from the European Commission, the Council of Europe and hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate to discuss Orthodoxy and problems of democracy and human rights in the modern world. The event began on 24 June 2004 and will last until 27 June. It is organized with the support of Ukrainian state authorities and the personal participation of Volodymyr Lytvyn, speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament.

Cherkasy -- A monument to commemorate 142 priests who were persecuted during the years of Stalin’s regime has been erected in central Ukrainian Cherkasy. The monument consists of a cracked brass bell and a priest leaning over it. This news was reported by the information agency “News-Ukraine” on 19 June 2004.
