Soccer Club President Gives 5 Million UAH to Donetsk Monastery

Renat Akhmetov, president of the “Shakhtar” ("Coal-miner") soccer club, decided to allocate 5 million hryvnias (approximately 1 million US dollars) for the Sviatohorsk ("Holy Hill") Monastery in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region. This news was reported on 27 May 2004. The money will be used to support the regional “Sviatohorsk-2004” project, which entails the restoration of the monastery and the establishment of a tourist infrastructure.

Russian Old Believer Metropolitan Visits UOC-MP Monastery in Odesa

Odesa – Metropolitan Adrian, head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) of the Old Believers, accompanied by Bishop Savatii of Kyiv and all Ukraine of the ROC of Old Believers, and the official church delegation, on 26 May 2004 visited the men’s Dormition Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in southern Ukrainian Odesa.

Socialist Claims Agreement with Jews over Paper Conflict, Rabbi Denies Talk

During an alleged telephone conversation on 24 May 2004, Oleksandr Moroz, leader of the Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU), and Yaakov Dov Bleich, chief rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine, discussed the conflict between the “Silski Visti” (“Village News”) newspaper and the Jewish community of Ukraine. The latter accused “Silski Visti,” which is the Socialist Party’s newspaper, of anti-Semitism after it published an article by Prof. Yaremchenko, entitled “Jews in Ukraine Today: Reality without Myths.” Yurii Lutsenko, an SPU leader, said this in an interview for the Ukrainska Pravda (“Ukrainian Truth”) Internet portal. According to the Mignews information agency, Rabbi Dov Bleich denied having such a conversation with Moroz.

Kyiv Jews Publish Prayers for Government

The Jewish community in Kyiv published a prayer book containing prayers for the Ukrainian authorities. This was announced by Vadim Rabinovich, leader of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress and the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, at a press conference in Kyiv on 24 May 2004.

Jewish Community Accuses Newspaper of Anti-Semitism, Supporters Protest Closing

During a meeting of about 5,000 people in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on 25 May 2004, the local Jewish community and the International Anti-Fascist Committee accused the “Silski Visti” (“Village News”) newspaper of anti-Semitism. In response, approximately 1,000 supporters of “Silski Visti” picketed the Court of Appeals in Kyiv, protesting the closing of the paper.

Bakhchysarai -- Monks of the Dormition Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in southern Ukrainian Bakhchysarai, Crimea, expressed their concern over the construction of a tourist bridge that could damage the monastery building. Jewish Graves Damaged in Kyiv

Kyiv -- Practically all the Jewish graves, more than 50, were severely damaged at the Kurenivskyi Cemetery in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the night on 23 May 2004. Moshe-Reuven Asman, chief rabbi of Kyiv and the Kyiv region, claims vandalism. The local police say the graves collapsed from age.

Kyiv -- Approximately 4,000 faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) marched from the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves to the Ukrainian Parliament on 22 May 2004 in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. They were protesting Ukraine’s possible entry into NATO and also legislative bills introducing electronic identification codes for tax purposes.
