Kyiv– The Roman Catholics of Kyiv led their fourth prayerful demonstration for the return of the Church of St. Nicholas in Kyiv. The gathering took place on 28 September 2004 near the building of Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers. Despite numerous promises the government has made to the Catholics (including to the former papal nuncio to Ukraine, Nikola Eterovic), there has been no progress in the matter, the Catholic Media Center reports.
Ukrainians “Fooled” during Election Campaign, Says Autocephalous Orthodox Archbishop

Kharkiv– “In the strife of the election campaign, we, the people of Ukraine, are being fooled,” said Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Archbishop Ihor (Isichenko) of eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv and Poltava. The archbishop issued a pastoral address to the faithful on 27 September 2004 regarding the presidential elections to be held on 31 October.
Orthodox (UOC-MP) Church to Work with Anti-terror Experts

Kyiv– Archbishop Auhustyn (Markevych), head of the Synodal Commision of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate [UOC–MP] on Cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and Other Military Bodies in Ukraine, and Serhii Skorokhvatov, head of Alpha, an international organization of veterans of anti-terror units, have agreed to cooperate to form soldiers with patriotism and courage. Scientologists Threaten Legal Action against Christian Newspaper

Kyiv– Representatives of a Kyiv community of the Church of Scientology intend to sue the editor of “Cornerstone” (Kamien Krayeugolnyi), a Christian newspaper. Ruslan Kukharchuk, chief editor of the paper, published an article in the June issue on what he called the “dangers of the Scientology cult,” which is spreading in Kyiv and Ukraine. First Ukrainian Prayer Book for Blind Made

Lutsk, Lviv– The first Ukrainian prayer book for the blind, of whom there are 50,000 in the country, was prepared in northwestern Ukrainian Lutsk. Bibles for the blind in Ukrainian and English were also recently brought to Ukraine from the USA. The news was reported on 27 September 2004 by TV Channel 1+1 and Radio Luxury (Luks) FM.

Kyiv–- By decree, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma conferred the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the 5th degree on Metropolitan Nykodym (Rusnak), head of the Kharkiv eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). According to the press-service of the president of Ukraine, the bishop was awarded for his considerable personal contribution to the revival of spirituality, establishment of ideas of charity and accord in society, and his active peace-making and charitable activities. Chernihiv – A community in eastern Ukrainian Chernihiv of the Rusyn Orthodox Church-Abroad has been officially re-registered as a parish of the Rusyn True Orthodox Church. V.V. Melnychuk, governor of the Chernihiv region, issued the order of re-registration on the request of the faithful of the Church of the New Martyrs and Confessors Sts. Vasylii and Pakhomii, Archbishops of Chernihiv. The press-service of the Rusyn True Orthodox Church reported the news on 20 September 2004.
Institute of Tank Forces Opens First Military Chapel29.09.2004, [21:15] // Church-state relations //
Kharkiv– A chapel was opened on 20 September 2004 in the Kharkiv Institute of Tank Forces in eastern Ukraine. The tank drivers say it is the first military church in the Kharkiv region. The construction of the church took almost four years and was paid for by charitable donations, including those of officers of the military unit.

Kyiv-- More than 3,500 members and leaders of Jewish communities gathered in Kyiv for a conference of the Forum of Jewish Communities of Ukraine. The forum was organized by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJC), which is the largest Jewish organization in the country, incorporating 173 communities and about 40 rabbis. Israeli Finance Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and Shlomo Amar, Israel’s chief Sephardic rabbi, and FJC President Lev Leviev, attended the opening of the conference on 26 September 2004.
Scholars Call on Presidential Candidates to Recognize God’s Laws

Kyiv– Scholars of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences have released an address to all 26 of the country’s presidential candidates calling them to recognize God’s laws. The authors advise the politicians to value democracy, to love the people and to build the state on the basis of biblical ethics.
