Kyiv — At a briefing on 29 August 2006, Ukrainian Minister of Education Stanislav Nikolaienko said that the plan to teach Christian ethics starting with the first grade in general education schools of Kyiv may be rejected. In his opinion, the schools are not yet fully ready for the introduction of the subject.

Odesa – The Greek community in southern Ukraine’s Odesa Region was surprised and concerned to learn that the Greek Church of the Holy Trinity has been given a new name, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, without the word “Greek,” and that memorial plates were removed from the façade. Kyiv — The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate has come out against the idea of constructing a monument to 17th century Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the Kharkiv Region. Odesa — An ad from the Beeline mobile phone company that depicts two young people dressed in black and yellow clothing and hanging upside down (“mobile vampires”) supposedly offends the feelings of believers and, it turns out, violates Ukrainian legislation. After an appeal from religious ministers to the leadership of the branch of Beeline in southern Ukrainian Odesa, the company agreed to reject this brand. Odesa — On 19 August (the feast of the Transfiguration), Eduard Hurvits, mayor of southern Ukrainian Odesa, came to the city’s Dormition Cathedral and thanked visiting Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), for his many years of spiritual care of Odesa and its residents. Channel 5 Apologizes to Kyiv Monastery Head

Kyiv – The administration of TV Channel 5, in the person of general producer Yurii Stets, on 28 August 2006 apologized to Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid), superior of the Holy Dormition Church of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, for the behavior of journalist Natalia Tuhuzova on the territory of the monastery that day. It was also mentioned that Tuhuzova no longer works for Channel 5.
UOC-KP and Autocephalous Orthodox Continue Dispute over Odesa Church

Anatolii Korenkov. But a recent decision of the Suvorovskyi District Court has decided, on the contrary, in favor of the demands of UOC-KP Bishop Yakiv (Makarchuk) of Odesa and Baltia. UOC-MP Orthodox Clergy “Attack” TV Crew at Kyiv Monastery

Kyiv — Clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) on 28 August 2006 interfered with workers of TV Channel 5 that were filming on the territory of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. According to journalist Natalia Tuhuzova, at approximately 2:00 p.m. the crew was attacked by Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid), superior of the Holy Dormition Church of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, priests, the church security guard, and people in civilian clothes.
