Ukrainian Politician Reports on Meeting with Constantinople Patriarch

Chernivtsi – While presenting his team for the election campaign to the local councils in southwestern Ukrainian Chernivtsi on 22 February 2006, Olesandr Zinchenko, former state secretary of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, did not avoid church and religious issues. Zinchenko expressed his attitude towards religion and told about the aim of his recent visit to Istanbul and meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I. According to the politician, the only aim of that meeting was to negotiate the opening of a court of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Kyiv.

Ukrainian Parliament Rejects Law on Registration of Religious Organizations

Kyiv – On 21 February 2006, the Ukrainian Parliament considered and rejected the law “On the introduction of changes to Ukraine’s law “On state registration of juridical and natural people, business people.” (registration number 4389-1). The Institute of Religious Freedom reports that a new edition of the law did not solve the problem of “double” registration of organizations and so could not find the necessary support in Parliament.

Social-Christian Party of Ukraine to Hold Pre-Election Prayer “Marathon”

Kyiv – Up until the day before Ukraine’s parliamentary elections, the Social-Christian Party of Ukraine will conduct a prayer marathon, “30 Days that will Change Ukraine’s Destiny.” The event will take place from 25 February to 25 March, as Protestant Bishop Valerii Reshetynskyi reported on 21 February 2006.

UOC-KP Orthodox Forum in Ternopil Addresses President and Constantinople Patriarch

Ternopil – On 21 February 2006, with the blessing of Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), the UOC-KP Eparchy in western Ukrainian Ternopil conducted the First Ternopil Regional Church-Civic Forum “For a National Ukrainian Orthodox Church.” Present at the forum were more than 400 clergy and laity from all parishes of the eparchy. New Auxiliary Bishop Ordained for Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, US

Philadelphia, USA— Monsignor John Bura was ordained auxiliary bishop for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia on 21 February 2006 in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, was the principal consecrator.

Stamford Eparchy in US Has New Ukrainian Catholic Bishop

In a solemn ceremony presided over by Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Bishop Paul Patrick Chomnycky was installed as the fourth bishop of the Eparchy of Stamford, succeeding Bishop Basil H. Losten. The two-hour ceremony began at 12 noon on 20 February 2006 in the Chapel of St. Basil College Seminary in Stamford, Connecticut, USA.

Autonomous Orthodox Ask US Embassy to Help Church in Ukraine

Metropolitan Ioan (Notaro), prime bishop of the Autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America (AUOC-A), on 22 February 2006 sent a letter to James Heller, first secretary attaché at the US Embassy in Kyiv, asking for an investigation of the registration of the church by Ukraine’s government. UOC-KP Orthodox, Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Ministry Urge Help for Street Children

Kyiv – On 18 February 2006, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), and Lidia Porechkina, vice-minister of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, held a joint press conference on the difficult situation of homeless and poor children in the country. The patriarch and the vice-minister signed a joint address to the Ukrainian community.
