Landslides Threaten Monastery in Zhytomyr

Zhytomyr – The faithful and connoisseurs of architecture have sounded an alarm. The famous Three Mountain Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate near central Ukrainian Zhytomyr is under the threat of landslides which may cause its destruction. The monastery, which was built in the Middle Ages, is popular among pilgrims from all over the world. 5tv.com.ua posted the news on 29 June 2006.

Chernivtsi Priest Sells Old Icons

Chernivtsi – Fr. Mykola Protsiuk of the village of Korchivtsi in southwestern Ukraine’s Chernivtsi Region sold to unidentified buyers 10 icons from the 200-year-old church for 1000 hryvnias (approximately US $ 200). The villagers prevented him from selling the altar cross for 500 hryvnias (approximately US $ 100). RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 29 June 2006.

Ukraine’s Muslims Condemn Murders of Russian Diplomats in Iraq

Kyiv – On 27 June 2006 in an open letter the Arraid Muslim organization sent condolences to the families of the Russian diplomats murdered in Iraq, to the Russian government, and the whole Russian nation. The letter emphasizes that “Islam and the tragedy… in Iraq have nothing in common.”

Reformed Leader Expects Permission for Female Pastors in Ukraine

Warsaw – The leader of the Sub-Carpathian Reformed Church, in southwestern Ukraine’s Transcarpathia Region, hopes to convince the members of his denomination to reconsider a decision according to which only men can be pastors. blagovest-info.tld.mastertest.ru posted the news on 26 June 2006.

Greek Catholic Church in Kharkiv Robbed Again

Kharkiv – On 25 June 2006 when faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) came for Liturgy, they found that the trailer where Liturgies are served was broken into. Fr. Mykola Semenovych called the police, who during the search found that the church safe was broken into. Church property was stolen.

Ukrainian Orthodox Call Opposition Parties to Resign

Moscow – On 25 June 2006 leaders of Ukrainian Orthodox communities called upon the opposition parties at the Ukrainian Parliament to renounce their authority as national deputies in connection with “the threat to Ukraine’s state system.”

Greek Catholic Bishop of Ternopil Passes Away

Kyiv—Bishop Mykhail Sabryha of Ternopil and Zboriv of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church died on 29 June 2006 after long period of heart disease. He was born in 1940, entered the Redemptorist order and started studying in the underground seminary in 1963, and was ordained a priest in 1974 and a bishop in 1986.

Chernivsti Prepares for Anniversary Sobor of Old Believers

Chernivtsi – In the Hlybynskyi district in southwestern Ukraine’s Chernivtsi region, which held the world center of Russian Orthodox Old Believers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, preparations have begun for a business forum, a scholarly conference, and the celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Bila Krynytsia Eparchy of the Old Believers. UOC-MP Orthodox Faithful Do Not Want UOC-KP Head in Kharkiv

Kharkiv – On 26 June 2006 in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) had a prayerful demonstration near the Kharkiv Regional Administration (KRA). Over 500 people came to Independence Square requesting the governor to ban the visit of Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), planned for late June.

Ukrainian President Awards Greek Catholic Bishop

Kyiv – On 26 June 2006 Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree to award Bishop Yulian Voronovskyi of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and other prominent figures the order “for accomplishments,” second degree.
