Kyiv – On 28 January at the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, Archimandrite Mytrofan (Nikitin) was ordained bishop of Horlivka and Sloviansk for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). The Liturgy was presided at by Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC-MP. Bishop Mytrofan was appointed administrator of the revived Horlivka Eparchy of the UOC-MP in eastern Ukraine.
Deputy Zubov Closes Case against Donetsk Bishop

Donetsk – The court hearings following the claim of Ukrainian National Deputy Valentyn Zubov to defend his honor and dignity against Bishop Arsenii (Yakovenko), superior of the Holy Hill Lavra (Major Monastery) in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Region, finished quite unexpectedly. Kyiv – On 27 January 2007, the International Day of Commemoration of Victims of the Holocaust, the Ukrainian people, who lived through the Holodomor [man-made famine] of 1932-1933 and know what genocide is, expressed their sincere sympathy with world Jews. “Ukrainians will always keep the holy memory of those who died during World War II,” reads the address of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on the day of mourning.

Ternopil – According to Yurii Lutsenko, Ukraine’s former minister of internal affairs and now leader of the civic movement National Self-Defense, Ukrainians should unite, and not divide into party and non-party members, denominations, and languages. “It is vital that people pray, in various churches, but for a united Ukraine,” said Lutsenko on 24 January 2007 during a demonstration in western Ukrainian Ternopil.

Chernihiv Churches Discuss Alcoholism, Homeless Children

Chernihiv – On 25 January 2007, the regional administration in northern Ukrainian Chernihiv held a regular session of the regional Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. Participants discussed the social problems and religious situation in the region. The fight against alcoholism and the homelessness of children were top on the council’s list.
