Ternopil – Pentecost, the patronal feast day in the village of Rokhmaniv in western Ukraine’s Ternopil Region, which is known for the numerous conflicts that have taken place there, ended with a conflict on 27 May 2007 between the police and activists of the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU).

Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), and Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid), superior of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, received the highest awards of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress. The president of the congress, Vadim Rabinovich, presented these awards to them at the monastery on 30 May 2007. He noted a unique event: Orthodox hierarchs for the first time were honored for a great contribution to the consolidation of interreligious peace and friendship between the nations.

Kyiv – Having restored the Orthodox Church of St. Michael, ruined in 1935, the Kyiv City Administration (KCA) is planning to continue work on various Kyiv churches, including building a new cathedral for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). Ternopil – In the late evening of 27 May 2007 at the regional police station in western Ukrainian Ternopil, 40 representatives of the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine (UOBU) and the local church community blocked the entrance to the District Prosecutor’s Office, where three members of the UOBU, detained after a clash over the church in the village of Rokhmaniv, had been brought.

Simferopol – On 27 May 2007 at 4 a.m., “unidentified persons made another attempt to attack the building of the Mejlis [the representative body] of the Crimean Tatars.” Four unidentified persons broke the Mejlis’ window on the second floor, where the Mejlis press service is located. “The Mejlis’ guard reported the incident to the police,” noted the text of the press service.

Lutsk –“A single church is sure to… unite Ukrainian society.” So said Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), at Holy Trinity Church in northwestern Ukrainian Lutsk on 28 May 2007.

Chernihiv – In northern Ukrainian Chernihiv, vandals ruined almost two dozen grave monuments at the ancient non-functioning Jewish Cemetery on Lubetska Street. According to the police, the crime report came from a cemetery employee who had come to remove overgrown plants. As podrobnosti.ua reported on 24 May 2007, local and regional police quickly arrived at the scene.

Ternopil – Faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) of western Ukrainian Ternopil were to express their indignation and oppose marking the 15th anniversary of the Kharkiv Sobor (Assembly) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) at the Pochaiv Lavra (Major Monastery), at which Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) was elected head of the UOC-MP, by picketing the monastery. Ivano-Frankivsk – An address in support of the “Renewal” page started by the regional newspaper “Halychyna” in western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk was signed by local church hierarchs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox churches and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan and Moscow patriarchates. The leaders stressed the growth of immoral phenomena in society and noted that, to counteract the spiritual crisis, it is necessary to join efforts, regardless of denominational adherence. galychyna.if.ua posted the news on 24 May 2007.
