Odesa – The Internal Policy Department at the Odesa City Council (OCC) made it impossible for priests of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) to enter the Interchurch Council, and it does not invite the priests of the UAOC to any city meetings, claims the Odesa Eparchy of the UAOC. According to od.uaoc.net, the priests of the UAOC “were also ignored when the Odesa mayor presented his report on the establishment of Church representative offices to the territorial community.”

Kyiv – On 28 November 2007, Bishop Zakharii (Chernov) of Bohuslaw and Bilhorod of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) died of a lingering disease at the age of 43. The UAOC press service posted the story.

Kyiv – The government does not monitor activities of 33,000 officially registered and non-registered religious organizations, said Valerii Chabanenko, head of the national civic organization Cults and Society, said at a press conference on “National psychological health and activities of neo-cults in Ukraine” held at the Interfax-Ukraine Information Agency on 28 November 2007. Participants discussed the affects of neo-cults active in Ukraine, specifically on the psychological health of the nation and legislative violations by certain civic and religious organizations which have features of a destructive cult.

Lviv-Chernivtsi – On 26 November 2007, in the conference hall of the Holy Spirit Seminary affiliated with the Ukrainian Catholic University in western Ukraine’s Lviv, a conference was held on “The Theological Heritage of St. John Chrysostom,” marking his death 1,600 years ago. St. John is the author of the liturgy which is still used by churches of the Byzantine tradition. Festivities were also conducted at the Theological Department of the Yurii Fedkovych National University in southwestern Ukraine’s Chernivtsi.

Kyiv – The Novomedia Association of Christian Journalists, Editors and Spokesmen, call upon all Ukraine’s Christian Churches, regardless of their denomination, to pray for the mass media on Sunday, 2 December 2007. “Christianity and mass media in Ukraine should be united in their objectives, views and vision,” say the initiators of the prayer initiative.

Donetsk – According to the eparchial department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), a church building will be constructed in the memory of Holodomor victims with the blessing of Archbishop Yurii (Yurchyk) of Donetsk and Mariupol. Continuous prayer at the church will be the most important act of repentance in memory of the millions of innocent people who died during the Holodomor of 1932-33 and an example to generations to come not to allow a similar tragedy to happen again. Cherkasy –In Subotiv, once the center of the Cossack regiment since the mid 17th century and residence of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the reconstruction of Illinska Church is coming to an end, as Anatolii Ovcharenko, assistant head of the Capital Construction Department at the Cherkasy Regional Administration, informed the newspaper “Hazeta po-Ukrayinsky”.
