Jerusalem—Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and Palestine received a group of pilgrims from Ukraine led by Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan) of Kyiv on September 26. According to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church web site, the ceremony was attended by Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyshyniv and Moldova accompanied by many clergymen, hierarchs and clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and more than two hundred pilgrims from Russia, Ukraine and Moldova.

Kyiv—The Ukrainian people and the international Jewish population marked the anniversary of the Babyn Yar slaughter on September 29. Organized by the Nazi regime, the Babyn Yar targeted the different nationalities of Ukraine, including Jews, Ukrainians, Russians, Gypsies, and Poles. The Jewish persecution was cruel and on a mass scale. It was a tragedy affecting not only Jews but all Ukrainian people.

Kyiv—On 25 September, in the premises of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s Bureau in Kyiv, a regular meeting of the Council of Representatives of Christian Churches of Ukraine was held under the chairmanship of Ukrainian Catholic Archpriest Oleksa Petriv. The main questions of the meeting’s agenda included a discussion of the situation in the area of Church-State relations in Ukraine and preparation of a regular meeting of heads of Christian Churches of Ukraine. The meeting was reported the Institute of Religious Freedom.

Jerusalem— A group of pilgrims from Ukraine led by Metropolitan Volodymyr Sabodan of Kyiv arrived in the Holy Land on September 25 to celebrate the 1020th anniversary of baptism of the Kyivan Rus. Sabodan’s delegation from the Moscow Patriarchate included 14 hierarchs, over 100 priests and over 800 laymen.

Kyiv—On September 25, the management of the Kyiv City State Administration organized a celebratory reception of the Righteous of Babyn Yar. During the reception, the city management promised that all the Righteous of Babyn Yar in Ukraine will receive an enlarged personal bonus in addition to their pension. An initiative of Mayor Leonid Chernovetskyi, the bonus will take effect in 2009.

Kyiv— The “Who is the biggest enemy of our money? Ourselves. One has to save in order to have,” said Fr. Vasyl Kopychyn, the oeconomus of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Fr. Kopychyn is the head of the Supervisory Council of the newly established non-governmental pension fund “Pokrova.” A press-conference, organized on September 25 in the UNIAn information agency, publicized the opening of the fund, which is intended to ensure appropriate pension for ministers and laity, not limited to the UGCC faithful, but all citizens of Ukraine.

Kyiv—a newly-built St. Sophia’s Home of Sister Servants of the Holy Virgin Mary was ceremonially consecrated by the Assistant Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh of the Kyivan Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on September 14.

Experts Discuss Improving Interfaith Relations in Ukraine

Kyiv— “Mutual knowledge of each other assists the dialogue between confessions,” said Oleksandr Sagan, head of the State Committee on Matters of Nationalities and Religions.
Sagan’s gave the introductory address at the round table at H. Skovoroda’s Institute of Philosophy in Kyiv on September 23. The round table included over 60 participants to discuss the subject of “Decisive principles of optimization of inter-faith relations: theoretical and practical dimensions” and to discuss the consequences of the celebration of the 1020th Anniversary of Baptism of the Kyivan Rus.

Kyiv—In the beginning of September, Metropolitain Volodymyr of Kyiv and all Ukraine received an official invitation from the head of the Constantinople Orthodox Church, Patriarch Bartholomew to visit Constantinople.
