VATICAN —On 23 April 2009, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the Vatican, Tetiana Izhevska, was awarded with the Grand Cross of Pope Pius IX and given the title of “Dame of the Grand Cross of Pope Pius IX.”

KYIV —All throughout Holy Week, the Ukrainian government notables and various military attachés to the embassies of the foreign countries visited Kyivan Monastery of the Caves to discuss cooperation with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). On 24 April 2009, the military met with UOC-MP head Metropolitan Volodymyr.
Horlivka Town Council Grants Right to Permanent Use of Land to Churches 29.04.2009, [11:50] // Church-state relations //
HORLIVKA —At its most recent session, the Horlivka Town Council of the Donetsk Region passed a decision to re-register the land use rights of a number of Christian communities. The decision grants several churches the right to permanent use of land as opposed to its previous right to rent land. This decision is one of the first examples of a practical implementation of the alterations to the Land Code of Ukraine, by which the Supreme Council of Ukraine allowed churches and religious organizations to acquire land for free permanent use. KYIV — Ukraine is the fifth most religious country in Europe after Cyprus, Poland, Slovakia and Portugal, according to a survey conducted by senior research analyst Olha Ivanenko of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Ukrainian Bishops from Argentina Meet With Pope 29.04.2009, [11:23] // UGCC //
VATICAN —Catholic bishops from Argentina are visiting the Vatican from 9 March to 30 April 2009. On 23 April, the Pope received Bishop Mykhail and Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head and auxilery bishop (respectively) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God in from Buenos Aires. The latter was ordained bishop in Lviv on 7 April 2009.

ÊYIV —At its 22 April 2009 session, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine passed a number of decisions regarding Church-State relations and also discussed how to improve cooperative ties between the State Committee on Matters of Nationalities and Religions and its regional bodies. Dnipropetrovsk Authorities Return Cathedral to UOC-MP 27.04.2009, [14:56] // UOC-MP //
DNIPROPETROVSK —On 23 April 2009, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, Victor Bodnar, ordered the building of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and its utility buildings to be handed over to the Dnipropetrovsk Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). Official documentation for this action was signed at the eparchial residence of the administrative center of the eparchy, according to orthodoxy.org.ua.
UGCC Patriarch Celebrates Easter Liturgy in the Church of St. Basil the Great in Kyiv 27.04.2009, [14:41] // UGCC //
Patriarch Lubomyr – Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh) – auxiliary bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy, Fr. Yosyf (Milian) – auxiliary bishop-designate of the Kyiv Archeparchy, and numerous clergy of the UGCC celebrated a solemn Divine Liturgy in the Church of Saint Basil the Great in Kyiv on the occasion of the Feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Liturgy was broadcast live by Kyiv’s First National Channel.
New Auxiliary Bishop Appointed for Kyiv Archeparchy 27.04.2009, [14:20] // UGCC //
On 16 April 2009, the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI blessed the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church to appoint Fr. Yosyf (Milyan) – a monk of the Studite order and pastor of the Church of the Annunciation of the Holy Mother of God at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ – auxiliary bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy. The titular see of Drusiliana will be given to the new bishop.
World Youth Day Celebrated in Lviv 27.04.2009, [14:16] // UGCC //
On 12 April 2009, a prayer meeting of the youth of the Lviv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was held at Saint George’s Cathedral as part of the celebration of World Youth Day. The slogan of this year’s Youth Day, as put forth by Pope Benedict XVI, is “we place our hope in the living God.”
