Ukrainian Orthodox (UOC-KP) Condemn Repeat Baptisms by UOC-MP

KYIV—On 25 February 2009, a session of the synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) was held, led by the church’s head, Patriarch Filaret (Denysenko). In particular, the participants heard a report of the patriarch on the practice of “repeat baptism” applied by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) to faithful of the UOC-KP. The UOC-KP considers this practice “a gross violation of the creed, dogmas and canons of the Orthodox church.”

VINNYTSIA— On 22 February 2009, Latvian-based Charismatic Pastor Aleksey Ledyaev held a religious meeting in the assembly hall of the Federation of Trade Unions of central Ukraine’s Vinnytsia Region. According to the head of the Vinnytsia Regional Department on Matters of Religions, Ihor Saletskyi, in accordance with article 24 of Ukraine’s law “On freedom of conscience and religious organizations,” preaching by foreigners is only possible with the consent of the local authorities which registered the statutes of the religious community which invites the foreigner. Saletskyi reported that no such consent was asked for or given in this case.
The department’s officials learned about the arrival of Pastor Ledyaev only from billboards. According to Saletskyi, on 22 February, before the beginning of the religious meeting, he talked to the wife of the head of the Full Gospel religious community New Generation, Oksana Shabonova. “I explained to her the details of the violation committed by them and asked her to organize a meeting with Ledyaev for me after the sermon,” reported Saletskyi.

KYIV— The president of the Ukrainian Association of Religious Freedom, Viktor Yelenskyi, believes that the new head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) will prevent the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church and will, on the contrary, strengthen the control of the ROC over the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) . Dnipropetrovsk Authorities Ready to Reimburse Dugsbery, Inc for Catholic Church Building

DNIPROPETROVSK— On 13 February 2009, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Administration, Viktor Bodnar, met with Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Jacek Kluczkowski. The parties discussed possible solutions to the conflict over the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Dnipropetrovsk. Bodnar stated that Dnipropetrovsk authorities are ready to assist in the return of the church to the Catholic community and are prepared to reimburse the American company Dugsbery, Inc for the purchase of the building “even taking inflation into account” in order to settle the issue.

MYKOLAYIV—On 24 February, was by the Mufti of Ukraine, Sheikh Akhmed Tamim visited the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv in order to get better aquainted with the Muslim community of the city and its needs. During the visit, thee Sheikh raised the question of building a mosque in the city and expressed a wish to meet with the mayor and the head of th regional state administration on this issue. The mufti evaluated the position of Muslims in Mykolayiv Region as unsatisfactory.

SUMY—According to the Orthodoxy in Ukraine information agency with reference to the press service of Sumy Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), on 19 February, representatives of the Kyivan Patriarchate took advantage of the conversion of the elder of the community of the village of Hudyma of Romna District, L. Butko to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate and seized the building and property of the community. Bishop Yevlohii of Sumy and Okhtyrka approached the head of the Sumy Regional State Administration with a protest against the actions of the representatives of UOC-KP.
The bishop also expressed protest against the silence of the state authorities, “which is taken by many people as support and approval of the lawlessness.”

KYIV—On 20 February 2009, the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP) published a statement regarding the Church of St. Nicholas in Kyiv’s Shevchenko District. The statement stresses that “through the actions of officials of the Shevchenko District state administration and representatives of the religious community of the UOC-MP [Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate] of the Icon of the Mother of God Joy of All Grieved, a new fire of inter-denominational tension is being stirred up, which can turn into rough confrontation. This is caused by the transfer by the Shevchenko District authorities of the Church of St. Nicholas at Nahorna Street, which was built for the Kyivan Patriarchate, to the use of the community of the Moscow Patriarchate.”
