Patriarch Lubomyr Comments on Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

For a whole week in churches of different confessions (Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate, Churches of Christians of the Evangelical Faith of Ukraine (Pentecostals), Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church(UGCC)), as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25) Christians of different Churches conducted services. The final prayer took place on January 25 in the Church of Saint Basil the Great (UGCC). "In churches of different confessions we prayed for unity. Unity as a gift from the Lord, unity which has to be among us Christians, in fulfillment of the testament of Christ. Unity like that which exists in the Holy Trinity." So Patriarch Lubomyr, Head of the UGCC, summarized the experience of the week.

In Odesa, as well as in other regions of Ukraine, on January 18 the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began. During this period Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants prayed together for unity. This practice in Odesa was begun by the chancellor of the Odesa-Crimea Exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Fr. Volodymyr Zhdan.

On January 22, 2009, in Kyiv the Museum of the Ukrainian Revolution 1917-1919 opened. So far the display occupies one large room in the former premises of the Central Council (Kyiv City Teacher’s House). In the future it is promised to extend the museum. In the displays of the Museum of the Revolution are pictures, documents, and personal items of heroes of those times, reports Channel 5.

Christmas Celebrated in Orphanages of Zaporizhzhya

From January 12 to 16, 2009, “Christmas celebrations in the orphanages and children’s institutions of Zaporizhzhya” were organized by the social center Rays of Light [Prominnya] (city of Zaporizhzhya) with the support of the local charitable fund Good Hope, the community of Saint Michael the Archangel of the city of Zaporizhzhya (Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church) and students of educational institutions of Zaporizhzhya and the Lviv Region.

Ukrainian Catholic University Included in UN’s Global Compact

LVIV—According to a report from the Information Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), on 26 January 2008 the university joined the Global Compact of the United Nations. The Global Compact’s network in Ukraine already has 130 members, including such influence groups as business, non-government sector, work organizations, and academic sector. Ukraine joined the compact in 2005.

KYIV — “Characterizing the activities of evangelical Christians of Ukraine, I would like first of all to note the high level of spirituality and tireless work in the realization of humanitarian projects.” So said Mykola Novychenko, assistant head of Ukraine’s State Committee on Matters of Nationalities and Religions, at a press conference held on 28 January 2008 with the theme “Summarizing the activities of the evangelical churches in Ukraine in 2008: Spiritual and social aspects.” RISU correspondent Svitlana Yaroshenko reported.

MOSCOW — According to the statutes of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) is a self-ruling church with rights of wide autonomy. This status was confirmed on 28 January 2009, the second day of work of the churchwide sobor [assembly] of the ROC.

DNIPROPETROVSK — On 25 January 2009 representatives of the Roman Catholic community in eastern Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk started a protest against “injustice on the part of the American corporation Dugsberry, Inc.” The premises of St. Joseph’s Church in the city have been bought by Dugsberry, Inc.
