KYIV —On 29 March 2009, Patriarch Filaret, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church –Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), consecrated Pavlo (Kravchuk) as bishop of the Ternopil and Terebovlia Eparchy of the UOC-KP at St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral in Kyiv. Said eparchy was established on 12 March 2009 in order to admit 33 parishes of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church into the UOC-KP in the Western Ukrainian region of Ternopil.

IVANO-FRANKIVSK — At its 29th session on 27 March 2009, the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council passed a resolution “to provide support to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for full rehabilitation by providing benefits according to and within the limits of Ukrainian law.”

KYIV — On 25-30 March 2009, Dr. Neville Callam, Secretary General of the Baptist World Alliance, visited Ukraine to participate in the 3rd Pastors’ Conference of the All-Ukrainian Union of Churches of Evangelical Christian Baptists (AUCECB). During the visit, Dr. Callam met with AUCECB pastors, youth, representatives of the Christian media, and high-ranking officials in the Cabinet of Ministers.

KYIV —Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko greeted Archbishop Mechyslav Mokshytskyi, the Lviv Metropolitan of the Roman Catholic Church, on occasion of his 48th birthday on 29 March 2009.
UGCC Bishop Awarded For Assisting Armed Forces of Ukraine 31.03.2009, [10:17] // UGCC //
KYIV —The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine awarded Bishop Mykhail (Koltun) of the Sokal-Zhovkva Eparchy with a medal “For Assisting the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” Bishop Mykhail is the head of the department of Pastoral Care of Defense and Law Enforcement Agencies of Ukraine, an integral part of the patriarchal Curia of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The medal was awarded “for his significant personal contribution in terms of spiritual ministry, the patriotic education of military and youth, and the efforts to elevate the prestige of military service.” The medal was awarded to him on occasion of his 60th anniversary.

Results of Religiosity Survey: Ukraine in Top Seven Most Religious Countries in Europe 30.03.2009, [15:45] // Survey //
KYIV –`The results of a 2008 survey on religion and religiosity conducted by the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) were presented on the UNIAN website on 26 March 2009. According to the 40-country 60-question survey, Ukraine is in the seven most religious countries in Europe. That being said, the survey also found that the majority of Ukrainians who call themselves Orthodox do not consider themselves part of any particular church institution, and that there are almost no registered representatives of new religious movements.

ÊYIV — Julia Doxat-Purser, a social and political representative of the European Evangelical Alliance (EEA) visited Ukraine on an invitation by the bishop of the council of the independent Evangelical Churches of Ukraine, Anatolii Kaliuzhnyi. This is her third visit, each aimed at promoting the formation of an active position of Christians in the political sphere of life of the country. Doxat-Purser met with Ukrainian politicians including Volodymyr Marushchenko, Pavlo Unhurian, and Protestant bishops Anatolii Kaliuzhnyi, Vitalii Vozniuk ,and Serhii Baliuk. KYIV — On 26 March 2009, the Mayor of Kyiv, Leonid Chernovetskyi, asked the Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican in Ukraine, Archbishop Ivan Yurkovich to pray for Ukrainian politicians in difficult political times.
Ukrainian Protestants Protest Belarusian Strife 30.03.2009, [14:29] // Foreign relations //
KYIV —On 25 March 2009 – Freedom Day in Belarus – public activists picketed in front of the Embassy of Belarus in Kyiv. Participants included members of the New Life evangelical church and its youth movement “Youth Platform.” They expressed support and solidarity with their fellow believers from Belarus, who are antagonized by authorities; both pastor Lukasyk and bishop Brukh had been deported from Belarus. The pastor of the Minsk New Life church and even it parishioners were also were persecuted, according to Kyivan journalist Mykola Malukha.
