Ukraine’s President Supports Participation of Churches in Independence Day Celebration

KYIV—On 21 May, 2009, Ukraine’s President issued Decree 346/2009 “On the Celebration of the 18th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine.” The president envisages an important role of churches and religious organizations in the celebratory events. The decree stipulates the participation of churches and religious organizations in the celebratory events not only in the capital but also in the regional and district centers of Ukraine.

On April 2, 2009, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), signed a decree which, on the basis of the decision of last year's Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, proclaimed the convocation of the 2009 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. The synod will take place in Lviv - Briukhovychi from November 29 to December 9. Patriarch Lubomyr calls the faithful of the church to pray that the preparation and conduct of the synod and its work be fruitful for the life of the UGCC.

UZHHOROD—On 26 May, 2009, commenced the events to mark the 60th anniversary of the forced liquidation of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Zakarpattia [Trans-Carpathian] Region, the 20th anniversary of the emergence of the UGCC from the underground, and the moving of the relics of the Blessed Teodor Romzha. The first event, held in the Uzhhorod Spiritual Seminary, was an international conference titled “Persecuted Church.”

KYIV—On 26-27 May, 2009, a joint meeting of members of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Supreme Archbishopric of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Conference of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine was held in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. The goal of the meeting was to maintain and develop friendly relations between the episcopates of the two churches and discuss questions of importance, as well as to exchange experiences of pastoral care for families.

LVIV—On 25 May, 2009, the 51st International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes, France was completed. Military from many countries come to Lourdes each year to pray for peace in the world. This year the Ukrainian delegation consisted of 32 participants.

KYIV—On 1 June, 2009, the charitable action “Let Us Help the Orphanage” in Kyiv with the blessing of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate Head Metropolitan Volodymyr will come to an end. The final event will be held on the Day of Protection of Children, at the residence of the metropolitan. A decision was made for the head of the church to give 100000 UAH that was gathered by the faithful of the churches of Kyiv and other material aid to the children of an orphanage of the village of Korchunok of the Khmelnytskyj region.

LVIV—On 24 May, 2009, the ceremony of consecration of a Greek Catholic Chapel of St. Luigi Orione and an oratory (building for children’s and youth activities) was held. The community of the Orionist monks from Italy began its activity in Lviv with the blessing of the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in 2002. Their activity is focused on work with children, youth, and disabled.

ZAPORIZHZHIA—On May 21-22, 2009, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), Metropolitan Volodymyr, made an archpastoral visit to the Diocese of Zaporizhzhia. On the first day at the Regional Local State Administration of Zaporizhzhia the UOC-MP primate blessed the signing of the agreement on cooperation in the area of physical education and sport by the local authorities and the diocesan administration.

KYIV—On May 18-21, 2009, at the invitation of Ukraine's State Committee of Nationalities and Religions, the delegation of the State Nationalities Commission of the Chinese People's Republic, headed by Mr. Yaz Tzanyan, visited Ukraine. On May 20 the delegation, accompanied by the head of the Ukraine's State Committee of Nationalities and Religions, Yurii Reshetnikov, visited the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr, at his primatial residence at the Kyiv Cave Monastery.

Greek Catholic Eparchy of Stryi Distributes Humanitarian Aid from Holy See to Flood Victims

In the middle of May 2009 the Pontifical Council Cor Unum began the realization of the project of a grant of help to the population of the Stryi Eparchy which suffered as a result of last year's flood. The help is directed at the sphere of rural education, restoration of parochial property, distribution of food packages, and renewal of agricultural land lots.
