Kyiv—On 20-23 October, in the town of Krasyliv of the eastern Ukrainian Khmelnytsk Region (Evangelization Center of the Capuchin Brothers), the final inter-confessional seminar for chaplains of traditional and Protestant Churches of Ukraine was held. The purpose of the event was professional training and exchanging experience of persons involved in Christian ministry in prisons.
According to the information department of UGCC, the All-Ukrainian inter-confessional seminars were held according to an agreement between the Ukrainian Inter-confessional Christian Spiritual Mission, the Ministry of Charitable Care in Prisons and the State Department of Execution of Penalties.
The participants heard a course of lectures (72 academic hours) read by teachers of the Bila Tserkva School of Specialized Training of Personnel of the Criminal-Executive System of Ukraine. At the end of the seminar the teachers conducted an examination, according to the results of which certificates will be presented to the chaplains in the beginning of November, 2008 in Kyiv.
“On receipt of the documents, the chaplains will be allowed to conduct ministry in institutions of confinement and, what is more important, will be able to provide professional help to convicts after the pattern of democratic European countries,” noted the head of the management board of the mission, Fr. Hryhorii Draus, in an interview.
Every region of Ukraine was represented by persons, who bring the Word of God to convicts and serve to help them repent and be converted. According to the information department of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, it was represented by the largest delegation of chaplains at the training session.
During the seminar sessions, ecumenical prayers were conducted under the headship of Fr. Draus.
